TIPS / QUESTIONS ABOUT MOVING YOUR AUTOMOBILE |
 |
|
HOW MUCH GAS SHOULD I LEAVE IN THE TANK?
Technically any amount is OK however you should leave enough in the tank so that the car won't run out when being moved on or off of the truck. At least 1/4 tank is preferred by most carhaulers. In a perfect world it is preferred that you don't leave more than that so as not to contribute to more weight. The weight of just the gas in your car is not much of a factor however when you multiply that by 9 or 10 cars on the truck it becomes a substantial amount.
CAN I LEAVE PERSONAL ITEMS IN THE CAR?
Again, a factor here is weight! Also safety! Most carriers prefer you to only add about 100 lbs. or less to the weight of the vehicle. Department of Transportation regulations only allow trucks to operate on our highways at certain weights. When you multiply the number of cars that can fit on an interstate car hauler by the weight of additional items in each vehicle it can substantially add weight to the total weight possibly causing the unit to be overweight at a weigh station.
Another important reason for this requirement is due to the shipping / household goods carriers / commodities requirements. Auto haulers are only licensed to haul autos. Amounts of weight in a vehicle in excess of 100 lbs are considered LTL (less than truckload) shipments. Only Household Goods Carriers are properly licensed to carry shipments of personal property such as these.
Additionally, cars that are stuffed full of property can be a hazard for the driver that is loading / unloading the vehicle. Complete 360 degree vision is essential when loading / unloading a car / truck.
States that have Dept of Agriculture check stations have been known to spread the entire contents of cars stuffed to the ceiling with goods so as to check them for contraband / dangerous materials. This causes serious delays and can result in confiscation of items not authorized to be hauled by car carriers. While it is rare, I have seen this happen.
HOW DO I PAY THE DRIVER WHEN MY CAR IS DELIVERED?
All carriers require that you pay by certified funds of some sort. Cash, Money Order and certified bank check are all acceptible forms of payment. The carrier should remind all customers when picking up a unit at the origin location of this however alot of times it is a second party who will be recieving the delivery and making payment. This is why it is important that your driver communicate with the destination location while in route on a weekday so as to allow time for arrangements to be made by the party at destination.
It is important to remember that if for some reason a carrier does accept a personal check from you that you are certain the check will be honored. Writing a bad check for transportation charges from one state to another is a federal offense.
HOW CAN I BETTER ASSURE MYSELF THAT MY CAR OR TRUCK WILL BE PROPERLY HANDLED / TRANSPORTED?
My advice is to make sure you are choosing a good carrier! As with alot of services you may not use regularly this can be difficult. Today's cars and trucks have very different suspension systems from vehicles of just a few years ago. Improper handling / securement of these vehicles can damage the suspension system. Don't hesitate to ask the carrier questions about your particular model and how it will be handled.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE IF MY CAR IS DAMAGED SOMEHOW?
The carrier! While even the best carriers will take painstaking efforts to properly transport your auto, there are the forces that be. Irresposible Dump truck haulers, construction areas, hail and other forces out of our control are there. This is why it is so important to adhere to the policies of the carrier so there can be no question when a damge issue arises. EXAMPLE: A carrier loads a vehicle loaded with personal property which seriously limits his vision when loading. He scrapes the passenger rear view mirror when loading. After having advised the customer that it is dangerous to load a vehicle with limited vision he may refuse a claim such as this.
SHOULD I SHIP MY CAR IN AN ENCLOSED TRUCK OR AN OPEN ONE?
The main difference here is price! Shipping in an enclosed trailor is much more costly however it does eliminate the enviornment from the "powers that be" equation.
I'VE NOTICED THERE ARE TRANSPORTATION BROKERS AND CARRIERS, HOW DO I KNOW WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE AND WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?
A carrier will always be the actual company who transports your vehicle. In most cases however a carrier's coverage area might not spread as far as you would require. A broker or transpotation specialist can be useful in that they maintain a large quanity of carrier relationships which allows them to claim a much wider coverage area. Which is better? In my opinion you have to decide. I will say that some brokers will put your car on the first carrier who answers their web posting. To me this is scary because you don't get a chance to check out this carrier. I suggest you ask your broker a couple of questions.
1) Will you be using a carrier you are familiar with to handle my vehicle or posting it on a carrier website?
2) When I agree to give my business to you, can you tell me the carrier at that time? (When you choose a direct carrier ask them the same question!)
3) Can you guarentee a specific delivery day?
Remember, I strongly advise that you always ask about payment, service history and dates of p/u and delivery.

Emmett, your driver Dave Marshall was great! He really went out of his way to work with us at the last minute when our arrival plans changed. Dave is a professional, you should be proud to have him with your company. Thanks again! Dave Butler
We've been using auto transporters for years and you guys are beyond a doubt the best crew we've ever worked with. Stewart Cadillac, Houston, Texas
My one and only experience with carhaulers was in 1998 and it was a miserable one! After great reluctance I had you transport my daughters Mercedes home when she got out of school in Florida. I must say Emmett, you have reinstated my confidence in this service. Thank You.
G. Pambichi / Denver, Colorado
I want everyone to know that Emmett Delaney Transportation is a great company. My windshield got chipped en route to Florida. While I was on my first day of work I came out to go to lunch and the windshield repair guy was there to replace my windshield. It was done in 20 minutes. After all the negative stuff I had read on the net and stories I had heard about how you can't get something fixed if it is damaged I was very impressed with the way Emmett handled this matter. I WILL be using this company again.
